About School of Mathematics,Physics and Statistics

The School of Mathematics, Physics and Statistics (SMPS) was established in August 2022, formerly known as the School of Sciences (2002-2014) and the College of Arts and Sciences (2014-2022). The SMPS now has the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Statistics, and the Teaching and Research Section of University Physics. It has four undergraduate programs including Information and Computing Science, Applied Statistics, Economic Statistics, and Applied Physics, as well as a higher vocation program Optometry Technology.

The SMPS has more than 53 faculty members, including 43 full-time teachers, five professors, 21 associate professors, and 32 teachers with doctoral degrees. Our teachers have won honorary titles such as Shanghai Excellent Educator, Shanghai Talent Promotion (Yucai) Award, and Shanghai March 8th Red-Banner Pacesetter. Four teachers have been part of the SSPU’s Outstanding Young Teachers Climbing Plan. The mathematical modeling guidance team has won the SSPU President’s Award for five consecutive years, and the university mathematics teaching team has won the same award for six times.

The SMPS follows the guidance of discipline construction and carries out scientific research by focusing on the cutting-edge issues in the first-level disciplines like mathematics, statistics, and physics. The past few years has seen rapid growth in our academics and their research capabilities, with fruitful results being achieved in 13 National Natural Science Foundation projects (including the General Programs and the Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars programs), the Shanghai Natural Science Foundation projects, and the Sailing Project, and the publication of more than 100 papers in important journals at home and abroad (more than 80 of them have been included in the SCI) and many monographs and textbooks.

The SMPS promotes undergraduate teaching through the development of disciplines. Aside from public basic courses such as university mathematics and university physics, it carries out education and teaching reform and explores the talent training models, so as to facilitate the training of application-oriented innovation talents. In recent years, our teachers have done a good job in curriculum co-development and sharing: Mathematical Analysis and Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics have been selected as Shanghai Excellent Courses, Advanced Mathematics C has been selected as a demonstration course taught in English for international students in Shanghai universities, and Advanced Mathematics A has been selected as Shanghai First-class Course. They have also won the Shanghai Excellent Teaching Achievement Award, the National University Micro-Course Competition Award, the Shanghai University Young Teachers Teaching Competition Award, etc.

The SMPS has been working to develop such programs as Information and Computing Science, Applied Statistics, and Economic Statistics. It seeks to integrate industry and education by establishing long-term and stable practice bases with enterprises and co-cultivating talents urgently needed by the economy and society. In recent years, our students have achieved many successes in competitions such as the National Mathematical Modeling Competition for College Students, the Mathematical Competition for College Students, the National Market Research and Analysis Competition for College Students, and the “Internet +” contest. Our graduates are also very popular in the job market, which makes our employment rate among the top in SSPU.
