About School of Mathematics and Statistics
The School of Mathematics and Statistics traces its origin back to the Faculty of Science founded in 2002. It has evolved through stages as the Division of Arts and Sciences and the School of Mathematics‑Physics and Statistics, and adopted its current name in August 2026. The school comprises the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics, offering three undergraduate programs: Information and Computing Science, Applied Statistics, and Economic Statistics.
The school has 39 faculty and staff members in total, including 31 full‑time teachers, 5 professors and 15 associate professors, among whom 26 hold doctoral degrees. Many faculty members have been awarded honors such as Shanghai Outstanding Educator, Shanghai Yucai Award, and Shanghai March‑8th Red‑Banner Pacesetter. The mathematical modeling coaching team has received the President’s Award of Shanghai Polytechnic University for five consecutive years. The university‑level mathematics teaching team has won the same award six times. The female faculty of the Department of Mathematics has been honored as the March‑8th Red‑Banner Collective of Shanghai Polytechnic University.
Centering on theoretical and applied issues at disciplinary frontiers, the school conducts scientific research in first‑level disciplines including mathematics and statistics. In recent years, its academic researchers have grown rapidly with steadily improved research capacity. Faculty members have presided over more than 20 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (including General and Youth Projects), as well as research programs supported by the Natural Science Foundation of Shanghai, the Sailing Program and the Magnolia Talent Program. Over 420 high‑quality papers have been published in key domestic and international academic journals, more than 120 of which are indexed in SCI. A number of monographs and textbooks have also been published.
Attaching importance to integrating research outcomes into teaching, the school keeps improving the quality of talent cultivation. While delivering public basic courses such as College Mathematics for undergraduates and Engineering Mathematics for postgraduates across the university, it advances educational reform and pedagogical innovation. In recent years, faculty have collaborated on curriculum co‑construction and sharing and achieved fruitful teaching results. Mathematical Analysis and Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics have been recognized as Shanghai Excellent Courses; Advanced Mathematics A has been selected as a Shanghai First‑class Course; and Advanced Mathematics C has been accredited as a Shanghai Demonstration Course Taught in English for International Students. Teachers have won numerous prizes in competitions including the Shanghai Excellent Teaching Achievement Award, the National University Micro‑Lecture Competition, the Shanghai University Young Teachers’ Teaching Competition, and the Shanghai University Teaching Innovation Competition.
For specialty development, the school promotes coordinated progress between disciplines and undergraduate majors. It advances the development of Information and Computing Science, Applied Statistics and Economic Statistics. Prioritizing the integration of industry‑education and science‑education, it has established long‑term, stable practical‑training bases with multiple external enterprises to jointly cultivate application‑oriented talents that meet socio‑economic demands. Meanwhile, new technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data and computational intelligence are introduced to boost interdisciplinary integration and teaching innovation, and strengthen students’ computational thinking and innovation capabilities.
In recent years, students have achieved outstanding results in national competitions including the Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, the National College Mathematics Competition, the National College Market Survey and Analysis Competition, the National Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest, as well as innovation and entrepreneurship events such as “Challenge Cup” and “Internet+”. These achievements demonstrate students’ rigorous scholarship and pioneering spirit. Graduates are equipped with solid mathematical and statistical foundations and practical capabilities, and are well‑received by employers, maintaining an employment rate among the highest across the university.
Looking ahead, the school will further deepen educational reform, leverage emerging technologies including artificial intelligence and big data to empower talent cultivation, promote interdisciplinary development and industry‑education integration, and continuously raise its capacity in scientific innovation and the quality of student training. It strives to build a high‑level school with distinctive features and competitive strengths, and contribute to the university’s goal of becoming a top‑tier application‑oriented innovative university featuring deep industry‑university‑research integration, distinctive technological strengths and wide‑ranging industry recognition nationwide.
