On the morning of October 24, Professor Chen Xiongda from School of Mathematical Sciences of Tongji University was invited to give a lecture entitled Optimization Design of Fixed-Sun Mirror Field to the students and teachers of the college. The lecture was hosted by Ms. Shao Wenting.

Reporter Introduction: Xiongda Chen is a professor at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Tongji University. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Computational Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1998, and spent two years of postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Alliance (MITA) in Singapore. His research area is nonlinear programming theory. He has been engaged in the teaching of mathematical modeling and the guidance of competitions for a long time, and has guided students to win many awards in national and international mathematical modeling competitions, published and co-published modeling textbooks, chaired and participated in a number of teaching, research and reform projects in Shanghai, and was awarded the Baosteel Outstanding Teachers' Prize and the National Outstanding Instructor in Mathematical Modeling. He is now the organizing committee and deputy secretary general of Shanghai Mathematical Modeling Committee, and the deputy secretary general of Mathematical Modeling Committee of China Society of Industrial Applied Mathematics.

In this lecture, Prof. Chen introduces the optimal design of fixed-sun mirror field for the 2023 National University Student Mathematical Modeling Competition A problem. The report explains the content of the problem and a reasonable solution, and analyzes in depth the main difficulties of the problem and the points that need attention. Finally, the established model was analyzed, compared and evaluated.

Through Professor Chen's report, our teachers and students gained a new understanding of optimization problems with practical background, abstracting practical problems into a mathematical model and choosing a reasonable solution. After the lecture, some teachers and students had an in-depth exchange and discussion with Prof. Chen, who also wished our school to achieve better results in the next National University Student Mathematical Modeling Competition.
